Thursday 5th January 2006 Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon remains in a critical condition in the intensive care unit at the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem after seven hours of surgery following a massive stroke and bleeding in the brain. His condition has been stabilised. Deputy Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has taken over for the time being. Edward Timms, founder of the Centre for German-Jewish Studies at the University of Sussex, has been made an officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen's Birthday honours list, published on 10 June.
